The Legend of Zelda Movie

Link is coming to the big screen for the first time after his flop on TV.

Nintendo spokesman Hiromi Kazuki confirmed today that a deal was reached in mid-March 2009 to create the first full-length live action Legend of Zelda film, with German director Uwe Boll leading the project as executive producer and director. The deal, which had originally approached directors David Finch of Seven and Fight Club fame and Zack Snyder of the recent Watchmen and 300, is set to begin shooting in late 2009 or early 2010.

Uwe Boll's agent described the director as "very excited" to begin shooting the film, and is pleased by the possibility to touch down on "contemporary political messages" thanks to the time travel mechanic employed by the Ocarina of Time. He said he is currently looking at scripts now, particularly from screenwriter Ritz Sterling.

Boll says that he intends to utilize a mixture of the games for his inspiration to appeal to the widest audience of fans while "surprising them with my own twists and turns" so that people can still enjoy a "surprise" ending.

Although no cast has been finalized, rumors put Scarlet Johanson as his likely candidate for Princess Zelda, and Tom Selleck as her companion and guardian, Sheik. No word has yet surfaced on who will play the primary character, Link.

I'll probably go see it anyway. I love Zelda, played it since I was a kid, but seriously. This is just starting to be stupid.

If this is a joke it is a very stupid one. Come on, Uwe Boll? Who's going to believe that?

I don't know, NIntendo has been pretty desperate for mony lately. Could be real. No idea though, we will see.

Guys look on the bright side. Nintendo is probably going to knock some sense into him - Uwe has the inherent technical skills, he just has been without focus in any of his previous films. Fine I'm a little leery about this idea of him touching on "contemporary issues", but I trust Nintendo and don't think they'd just sell out their baby to someone like Boll unless they had a purpose.

To the poster above me: are you fucking stupid? Uwe Boll is an asshat, he's garbage, he's shit, what the fuck is Nintendo thinking? They better get rid of him ASAP, I don't care if they have to pay some sort of ridiculous opt out fee, just get him the fuck off of this title NOW. p.s. If you've ever seen Postal, you'd seriously rethink your position that Boll will ever "mature".

You know what I think? I think this is a shitty money making ploy on Nintendo's part. I'll bet you anything they're going to release some sort of crappy movie to generate guaranteed revenue, and then they're going to release a crappy video game version of that. Uwe Boll's going to derail the series. God I hate my life.

Oh, WTF?! This had BETTER be an April Fools' joke.

The Zelda series was awesome; I hope they don't drop the ball on this one.

@shimblue: Keanu Reeves would make a better Link. He's already going to be perfect for Spike!"
