Twilight Princess Info - What We Know So Far

New information about Twilight Princess is coming out all the time. We could only hope to put it all in one place, though doing it in a matter that was at least somewhat organized was a bit of a task.

Here's what we know so far - bits and pieces of information gathered from various interviews and places all across the internet... This is our attempt to put it all together. (Page last updated 10/22/06)

Be warned that this section may contain spoilers, so read at your own risk. Information, rather than being modified with new updates, will be simply added on, so some info in this page may be contradictory to info later on in the page. This is to preserve our information and the history of the progression of TP.

It has been confirmed by Nintendo that the game will take place several decades after Ocarina of Time.

The game will have humble beginnings - with a young man named Link living in Toaru Village, a rural, run-of-the-mill village, which is actually not in Hyrule. There is a festival every year among the neighboring villages, and usually the mayor goes to represent Toaru Village, but this year, he asks Link to go instead. In this game, Link is 16 or 17 years old.

The circumstances are still unknown, but Link will encounter something that will send him on his main quest. A quest which will, yes, feature both Zelda and Ganon. That much is known at this point.

The gameplay of the game will also be very similar to that of Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker, and will probably feature something similar, if not identical to WW's Parry technique, since it was such a big hit. Another nice little perk is the horseback combat that we've seen in the previous trailers.

The game will feature larger and a greater number of dungeons than we saw in OoT. The environment itself will also be much more massive than what we had available to us in OoT, and Eiji Aonuma says that Link might be able to fly across great distances. This suggests the existance of some kind of flying creature.

And - check this out - for the first time in Zelda history, the music will be entirely orchestrated.

It is understood that Link will be able to communicate with animals, and they will teach him abilities throughout the game.

There was also a hawk spotted in the trailer. As seen in the Roundtable gameplay videos, the hawk can be called to do little tasks by whistling with a piece of grass, much in the same way you call the horse.

The Master Sword will make an appearance in Twilight Princess.

You can name your horse whatever you want, so "Epona" will be returning for the hardcore Zelda fans. For the not-so-hardcore Zelda players, you can ride "Alexander" or "Stormy" or whomever instead, whatever your name preference may be.

OoT's fishing minigame will also be returning and will utilize to full extent the Wii controller's capabilities - using the remote and nunchuck like a fishing pole will be how to reel in fish, although there will probably be a different way for people who do not want to put much effort into their game playing.

And remember how expressionate Link was in Wind Waker? Even though they've moved back to the mature graphics, they're going to do their best to keep the ability for facial expression, and from what we've seen of recent screenshots, it's possible. It also seems that Wind-Waker-style cel-shading will also be utilized to some extent.

The model for Link in this game was, apparently, greatly influenced by the Western fans.

Though, the biggest shock came in the third trailer that was released just before the start of E3 - Link walking through a valley of some kind, and then suddenly keeling over and turning into a really cool-looking wolf. The wolf was still wearing the little earrings and everything. From what we gather from the trailer, he is captured after that, and broken out of his prison by a strange looking little character, apparently called Midna, who seems to help him fight while in wolf form. Midna seems to be an enemy of some kind, and Link must team up with her to fight a greater evil. These two will be inseperable while within the Twilight Realm.

From what we understand, the world is being consumed by a dark forced called "Twilight", hence the game name, and Link transforms into this wolf every time he enters Twilight, since humans cannot exist within Twilight. We can only assume this means he'll return to his original form after leaving it. A Link-to-the-Past-style Light World and Dark World sort of thing. When a part of the Twilight Realm is cleared, the Twilight will recede and that part of Hyrule will return to normal. According to Eiji Aonuma, Midna can exist in Hyrule, but there's something involved that hasn't been revealed yet. Some gamers speculate that Midna is Link's shadow that comes to life in the Twilight.

The game will span across both the Wii and the Gamecube, but from what we've seen the only differences will be the way the game is controlled, and maybe slight graphical changes.

The Twilight Realm will be in a hazy color instead of the black and white it was in the first few trailers.

There will be a total of nine major dungeons throughout the game, one more than in OoT. This number doesn't include mini-dungeons, mazes, or the final dungeon.

Golden Insects (reminds us of Gold Skulltulas) will be collectible items in the game.

You will need five heart pieces to complete one heart container.

New weapons include, but are not limited to, the clawshot, which will double as a hookshot and grappling hook, and the spikey ball, which we don't have much info on yet.

Toaru Village has been renamed to Ordon Village for the English version of the game.

Ordon's children will be kidnapped by invading monsters.

Monkeys will lead Link through the forest temple using a lamp.

Midna will be able to create force fields to stun enemies when Link is in wolf form.

Midna will be able to teleport Link to various points in Hyrule.

Wolf Link can dig to discover hidden passages and/or secrets.
